Keeping something is not bad. The goal of decluttering is not to own nothing. The goal is to make your space easier to use and less stressful.
Usually worth keeping
- Items you use regularly.
- Important documents, records, IDs, and warranties.
- Tools that solve real recurring problems.
- Comfort items that genuinely help you feel safe or regulated.
- Sentimental items that still feel meaningful, not only guilt-heavy.
Usually worth questioning
- Duplicates you forgot you had.
- Things kept only because they were expensive.
- Projects you no longer want to finish.
- Gifts you keep out of obligation.
- Items you would not miss if they were already gone.
Try a maybe box
If you are stuck, tag the item #maybe, put it in Unsure, and set a review date. If you do not need it before the review date, the decision may become easier.
Comfort matters. If an item helps you rest, regulate, or feel safe, that is a real reason to keep it.
